๐ŸŒŒ Jasper Dark Sky Preserve

Chase the Northern Lights

World's second-largest dark sky preserve. Nights 4 & 5 are our aurora windows โ€” here's everything you need to know.

๐ŸŒ  Dark Sky Science

What Makes Jasper Special

Jasper was designated a Dark Sky Preserve in 2011 โ€” covering 11,000 kmยฒ of Bortle Class 2โ€“3 skies with strict lighting bylaws. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on most clear nights.

๐ŸŒŒ Aurora Chasing Tips

  • Best window: 11:30 PM โ€“ 3:30 AM. Post-solstice, astronomical darkness begins around 11 PM in late June โ€” enough of a window for a real display.
  • Check Kp index before midnight. Download SpaceWeatherLive or My Aurora Forecast app. Kp โ‰ฅ 3 gives visible displays at Jasper's latitude (52ยฐN). Kp โ‰ฅ 5 is a full curtain show.
  • Face north and get low. Drive north on Hwy 16 past the town boundary. Pull over at any lake viewpoint โ€” reflection doubles the spectacle.
  • Let eyes dark-adapt for 15 minutes. No phone screens before or during viewing โ€” it takes 20 minutes for full rod sensitivity to kick in.
  • Camera settings: ISO 1600โ€“3200, f/2.8 or wider, 10โ€“15 second exposure. A tripod and remote shutter release are essential.
  • Solar maximum 2025โ€“2026 still active. The sun's 11-year cycle peaks in 2025 โ€” we travel just past peak, meaning heightened geomagnetic activity and stronger displays well into 2027.

๐ŸšŒ Crowd Avoidance Guide

  • Avoid Maligne Lake on weekends before 8 AM. The shuttle queue starts at 7 AM in peak season. Book the first shuttle online in advance โ€” walk-ups wait 2+ hours.
  • Moraine Lake: arrive by 5:30 AM or take the Parks Canada shuttle. The access road closes to private vehicles once the parking lot fills โ€” typically 6:30โ€“7 AM daily in July.
  • Valley of Five Lakes: go weekday mornings. A 4.7 km loop that takes 2 hours โ€” quiet before 9 AM, crowded noon to 4 PM.
  • Athabasca Glacier midday = tour bus chaos. Book the early 9 AM Ice Explorer tour. By 11 AM, three buses arrive simultaneously.
  • Helmcken Falls: always quiet. Wells Gray is still BC's best-kept secret. Even in peak season, the main viewpoint rarely has more than 20 people.
  • Patricia & Pyramid Lakes: Our best aurora lakeside spots โ€” local to Jasper, almost no crowd pressure after 10 PM.
